South Platte River

The South Platte River flows from its headwaters in the Mosquito Range west of South Park across Colorado’s northeastern plains. From downtown Fairplay to the Nebraska border at Julesburg, its course through Colorado is approximately 380.3 miles.

As it meanders through Logan County, the South Platte River includes several channels and flows near the Overland Trail Recreation Area. Fishing is optional, and there are many scenic walking/hiking trails along the Sterling stretch.

South Platte River Trails

Buffalo Skull Trail

The river trail system begins at the Buffalo Skull Trailhead off E Highway 6/Chestnut Street, offering a peaceful retreat into nature. The path winds along the river, where calm waters and gentle rapids create a soothing backdrop. Surrounded by tall cottonwoods and willows, the trail is lined with wild grasses and cactus. Resting spots invite you to pause and enjoy the serenity. In spring, the trail bursts with blooms; summer offers cool shade; and autumn paints the trees in vibrant colors. This tranquil trail provides a quiet, immersive experience, perfect for reflection and connection with nature.

Overland Trail Recreation Area

Penny Lane

Heading north from the Overland Recreation Area fishing pond, the Penny Lane Trail follows the river through a peaceful, wooded area. The dirt path, bordered by wild grasses and roots, is accompanied by the soothing sound of the flowing river. Tall cottonwood trees sway overhead. Along the way, peaceful spots invite you to sit, listen to the river, or watch dragonflies hover over the water. In spring, the trail bursts with life, and in cooler months, the bare trees create an ethereal landscape. Penny Lane offers a serene retreat, where nature’s beauty encourages relaxation and reflection.
