Celebrating the season in Sterling!

1.  Clarence’s Corner

Enjoy a nostalgic treat at Clarence’s Corner while visiting or shopping in downtown Sterling. Located at the Logan County Courthouse Square, this community landmark will be open for special occasions during December including Thursday, Dec. 20 from 5-8 pm. Clarence Mentgen faithfully popped popcorn here six days a week and earned his living for more than 38 years. The friendly “popcorn man” is no longer living, but he is forever memorialized with a bronze sculpture next to the replicated “Clarence’s Corner” popcorn stand. Learn more about the history here.

2.  Overland Trail Museum

Christmas on the Prairie at the Overland Trail Museum is the perfect event to truly put you into the holiday spirit! Step back in time as your stroll through the beautifully decorated museum and village buildings, stop by the roaring fire and enjoy a roasted chestnut, step into the High Plains Education Center to warm up with a cup of hot cider and a cookie, visit with neighbors and friends and listen to the music of the season. Open house dates are Tuesday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 20, 5-7 pm. Be entertained by local musicians: Braedon and Peyton Kloberdanz on Dec. 18 and the Brompton family on Dec. 20; Santa will be the special guest on Dec. 18 to give rides in his decked out fire truck! 3.  Parade of Trees

Sterling Public Library is filled with Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes for the 2018 Parade of Trees. There are approximately 110 trees decorated in a variety of themes by local individuals, businesses, organizations and groups. The library will offer a chance to enjoy all of the illuminated trees with the building lights off at the annual open house scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20 from 5-8 pm. Sterling is Sparkling and the Music is Merry!

1. Winter Ensemble Concert

For a joyous treat to your auditory system, Northeastern Music and Recording presents the Winter Ensemble Concert on Saturday, December 8 at 7 pm at the Dorothy J. Corsberg Theater at Northeastern Junior College. This event features performances by the department’s contemporary choir, concert choir, jazz band and concert band. Tickets are $5; free to NJC students/faculty/staff. Learn more here.

2. The 27th Noel

Continue the sound celebration with the Master Chorale and The Twenty-Seventh Noel Christmas Concert. Directed by Don Johnson, the performance is Sunday, December 9 at 4 pm, also at the Corsberg Theater at Northeastern Junior College. Admission is $10 for adults. 3. The Grill at River City

Whether it’s for lunch or dinner or sipping hot cocktails, make time for a stop at The Grill at River City where the holiday spirit overflows! They have decked the halls with boughs of holly and Christmas trees and bright lights for this festive season. Windsong Chorus, Centennial State Chorus and special guests present, “A Red, White and Blue Christmas” concert on Sunday, December 2, at 3 pm in the Frank Hunter Auditorium at Sterling High School. Admission is a suggested $8 donation and two non-perishable food items.

It might be chilly outside but it’s always warm and friendly inside Simkins Parlour. Stop in for a cold treat or warm soup. RELAX YOUR WAY THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

Sterling Public Library is offering Relax Your Way Through the Holidays on Saturday, November 17 at 2 pm. The program will help us take the stress out of our holiday season. Special guests will provide lots of tips on various topics, including Rece Herboldsheimer who will provide a wonderful program on using scarves to change your holiday wardrobe. Be sure to bring a scarf with you as she will be teaching how to tie them for different looks.

There will also be several flavors of coffee or hot chocolate and a scrumptious dessert to enjoy. Space is limited for the event so you need to reserve your spot by picking up a ticket at the library. Tickets are free and still available. (The relaxing kitty is not representative of actual program.)
